The MTV logo was revolutionary work of typography in that it was designed with the television culture and the moving image in mind so that it could be animated, and in a sense, constantly redesigned. There are no official MTV logo colors, which has allowed artists working with the symbol a lot of freedom for creating animations with the logo. MTV’s brief identification spots over the years show the logo re imagined in hundreds of ways. But no matter what color or texture, the logo remains consistent and recognizable. Check out the Station ID spots below and read Frank Olinsky’s story for the story on how the small, now defunct Manhattan Design team created the MTV logo.
